Cape Town’s Parking lot Show Offs

15 November 2010 No Comment

Most people take a nap after enjoying their Sunday lunch. Now, with summer knocking at the door, most of us will be heading down to the beach, only if you stay near the coast. Not the Cape Town petrol heads! Sea Point parking lot, one of two parking lots, is the home of “Show Off” rides on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The other parking lot is at the beachfront in Gordon’s Bay. This is where I saw “Strawberry Milkshake”, pulling up with the other bakkies from the Smart Trux Club, for the first time. Back then, it had a golden colour and was known as the “Golden Child”. Sadly, Magadie traded the “show scene” for the “drift scene”. Yes, he does burnouts, doughnuts and drifting with this beautiful pink bakkie! Not to worry though, Cape Town’s “King of Customs” is busy with a new project at his work place, “House of Customz”.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, Sea Point beachfront comes alive with families having picnics on the lawn, taking a walk along the beach path and some are just enjoying their ice cream. Besides all of the above mentioned, it is also the hang out place for most of Cape Town’s “Show Off” rides. I remember going there for the first time one Sunday afternoon a couple of years ago, “Hot looking” rides parked everywhere! Since then the “car scene” grew bigger and better and now you will find all makes of “hot looking” cars and bakkies pulling up. Most of them are “undercover” cars that you never see at the “Show and Shine” or “Drag”- events. It ranges from fast looking ones to showstoppers, not to mention the colours and DUBS! Loud music is prohibited-strict orders from the Sea Point Municipality! Here the guys and gals meet up with their buddies, speak and share their car ideas-speed or sound! Some of them will just pass through, making the “whoosh” sound just to make you wonder, what lies beneath. This is also the meeting point for most of the Cape Town based car clubs.

So if you stay in the “sunny and windy” city of Cape Town, get down to one of these parking lots and experience the “passion of car enthusiasts” for yourself! PLEASE NOTE: Get there early as these places are packed by 3 o’clock! Just remember to pack your picnic basket…

God Bless!
