Carnival City WOMZA Drift Championships 2011

23 March 2011 No Comment

An electric start to the first round of the Carnival City WOMZA Drift Championships with nineteen entries entering the first Round of the prestigious Carnival City WOMZA Drift Championships for 2011.

No shortage of thrills and spills as Imtiaz Dali was the first victim claimed by the engine reaper as his Toyota Soarer’s engine suffered a severe engine malfunction, dropping a valve through cylinder resulting in total destruction of the motion maker. The sounds of snap crackle and pop made by the destruction and carnage of the valve rattling around in the engine was  true conformation for Imtiaz that his power plant has died an uncanny death in the parade lap of all places.

With parade lap and formal introductions covered, the drifters settled into to the rhythm of night as preparations for the gauntlet laid before them would unsettle some and yet others not fazed by the dragon course but rather seen as a good challenge.

Informing the crowds of what was to be forthcoming, patrons shyly at first clutched their eateries in silence and as the drift night rolled on did the banter and gestures of the crowds become more prominent as they quickly learnt that to be shy at the Rock only lasts for five seconds as they eagerly protested for “one more times” with every close tandem drift.

Making his debut at drifting new boy on the block Andre Hassyn impressed the judges with his impressive style and ability of drifting so much so that he actually made it to the top eight.

But it was the final few tandem runs that got the crowds really worked up and bellowing out ONE MORE TIME ONE MORE TIME…. as the drifters forcefully colouring in the night sky with tyre smoke. By now the drifters in the pits started off their own theme song Whoo ha hoo hoo…. which in turn sparked off the crowds on the grandstand overlooking the drag strip and so the night ended off on a volatile high of note, but in a good way.

Etching in the final score it was Zaniel Satar walking off with first place after a right ding dong battle with Ernest Simpson ending in second place and third place went to Tim Stephens and forth place Jim Mc Farlane.

In the silver cup division first place went to Mathys Naude and second place went to Des Palmer.

With only smouldering embers of rubber left trackside to burn off and the final plumes of smoke dissolved into the black of night, patrons banter still went on as they did the march to their personal mode of transport, and the odd theme song sung still lingered on as everyone piped up with the occasional Whoo hoo ha hoo hoo… !
