29 August 2011 No Comment

Region: Cape Town
Event: SA Hot Rods Street Festival (MSA Drags)
Venue: Killarney Race Track
Date: Sunday, 11th September 2011 (9am – 5pm)

With a combination of exciting high speed events together with a selection of exotic static displays, the fourth annual SA Hot Rod Street Festival at Killarney Race Track on Sunday (September 11), promises to be easily the best of them all.

Off track attraction are going to include Live Bands, Kids entertainment, Stalls, Car and Motorcycle displays while the on track activities will feature Cape Town’s top quarter mile professionals tearing up the 400 meter drag strip. There will also be a burnout competition for the rods at the start line and maybe even a drifter or two on the oval. Last years event saw the New Pit facility abuzz with action and eye candy for all.

This year we welcome The Viper Lounge who will be hosting the bar, along with Monster Energy drink, SAB Miller and Jack Daniel’s. The stage along with the bar will be under the huge Monster Energy drink tent, along with couches, tables and chairs. There will be coffee and food available as always. The Street Festival is not a festival without some great bands so on the stage we welcome back Them Tornadoes and welcome new comer band The Rat Rod Cats for some live Rockabilly entertainment.

On the track we hope to see some records tumble with Bradley Van Rooi (BadBrad) having received much help from “Mike’s Place” in a recent rebuild for his Pro-Fit Golf and he is also awaiting his M/T rubber, if all goes his way he should beat his previous personal best of 11.66 seconds, very impressive for a front wheel driven VW Golf. Alvin Chetty did his first runs in a Ford Mustang at the last event and managed to make his mark at Killarney with a blistering 10.8 second run. I see some stiff competition going on here with Ralph Kumbier doing a 10.7 second run recently and Willie Nel doing 10.9 seconds with his Can-Am. Willie is awaiting parts to be imported for this required motor rebuild, this after a bad mechanical failure the last event. Alvin is hoping to improve on his 10.8 second run after sorting out a few small teething issues.

Keeping with the Hot Rod spirit, Gary Wilkins has also made some changes including ignition and fueling modifications to his Chev Camaro “nasty” Z28. Will local ace Tolla Daniels finally break the magic 10 second barrier in his Speed & Sound Escort.

Top Streetcars to keep an eye out for are Marlize Hoon in her Turbocharged VW Golf daily ride, this time possibly fitted with M/T semi-slick rubber to hopefully back up the 13.8 seconds run from the previous event. Maranoux van Schalkwyk 2 door Mk1 should be an impressive with straight cut gears specific for the 400 meters, added limited slip differential as well as M/T tyres. PDubs will also be there is his Ford ST hoping to take top honors in Class T with his previous personal best of 12.6 seconds. Will the power of the stock turbo Ford Focus RS be enough? Or will the bigger turbo DSG GTI show who is boss? Flat Four Racing will be represented by Brendan Moore in his red beach buggy and he is hoping for some consistent low 14’s with a normally aspirated 1800 cc 8 valve air-cooled beetle engine after 2 gearbox breakages in the last few meetings.

Admission is R40 per adult while scholars under the age of 12 enter free of charge. Gates open at 7.30am with the on track action scheduled from 9am.

Race entries will be accepted at the main gate caravan from 8am till 10am. For more information please email paul@wpmc.co.za or call 0215571639
