Interview with the “Punks”‏

24 May 2011 4 Comments
Finally I had a chance to do that long awaited interview with one of Cape Town’s BIGGEST car clubs, Team Autopunks. They are a local based car club, hosting “show and shines” and “sound offs”. I even had a chance to judge at some of their events and I must say, hospitality, that’s their main focus! Club owner, Grant De Stadler finally spared 5 minutes of his time to get down with AM.

JK : Who and what is Team Autopunks all about?
Grant : We a local Cape Town based car club out in Southern Suburbs, Muizenberg and we love pimping our cars to the extreme to represent our club.  ‘’Me brag, Me don’t drag’’ we do not support any illegal street racing or other activities of such nature. We have our own in-house services like: customized panel beating & spray painting (myself/Grant)), mechanical (Michael), car audio installer (Ashwin & Iemo). We also specialize in car accessories & audio to supply our local petrol koppe!!! We also purchased our own Term lab dB tester to measure car sound pressure levels as this is an interesting hobby for most car enthusiast. Therefore we also host “Sound-off’s & Show & Shine”-events in around Cape Town in order to raise funds for organizations in desperate need.
JK : Why did you start the club?
Grant : Myself, my wife Carmen, Michael (brother in-law) & my son Ashwin have always been busy with various task of improving any cars image both on the mechanical and bodywork side. So eventually many of our friends suggested that we start our own car clubs and that is how it all started. I registered Autopunks Car Accessories in August 2008 and our car club ‘’Team Autopunks’’ was registered as a sub division thereof by the end of November 2008. Officially by the 31 of October 2009 the club was launched at the Tiger Wheel & Tyre branch in Tokai.
JK : How long has the club been around?
Grant : About 2 and a half years now.
JK : What are the club’s values? What does the club stand for?
Grant : We plan to remain in action for as long as possible and to grow from strength to strength and to show our ongoing support to our fellow car clubs out here in Cape Town.
We acknowledge: Loyalty, ‘’Respect & Harmony for one another always’’
JK : What is unique about the way this club operates?
Grant : We treat all our members as family as we represent as a family.
JK : Every car event I attended, whether it’s a sound or show and shine event, Team Autopunks are always well represented by club members. How many active members do you have in your club?
Grant : We currently have 35 active club members and over 1500 fans. (I’m one of them-ed)
JK : What are the club’s plans for future growth or change?
Grant : Well, we don’t market or punish for members to join our club. Anyone can join if they wish to join free willingly. Our annual fee is R350 per anum which allows you the member to 2 t-shirts, 1 cap, 1 membership card and vehicle branding (logos).  Lots of benefits from our local automotive retailers.
JK : What are the challenging facets of the club?
Grant : We aim to remain 1 of the best car clubs in Cape Town.
JK : What makes Autopunks different from all the other car clubs in Cape Town?
Grant : We accept anybody of any age, race, sex, religion who owns any make or brand of vehicle or other automobile. Non vehicle owners welcome too!!!
JK : What are the club’s strengths, and what challenges does it face?
Grant : Well we do most of our own vehicles improvements thus saving costs. We try to improve often as the competition is very tough. We have gained over 59 trophies through our ongoing support at various events. At a show in Paarl in 2009, our club has taken seven trophies at this event. One of which was for “Best & Biggest Club Attendance”. We have 4 active facebook pages. Our car club page has over 1500 fans as this is currently the most active page. All our events get posted here. (Autopunks Car Club)
JK : How do you handle problems within the club?
Grant : We have our rules drawn up and approved by our committee, which implements our code of conduct for all members and new joining members. We have general meetings once a month to discuss any disputes or make decisions accordingly.
JK : What are your expectations for new club members within their first three to six months?
Grant : They have to prove their loyalty of their joining into the club by showing dedication and not losing effercosy for support at various events as they serve a three months evaluation period followed by committee approval of their acceptance.
JK : How can I become a member of Team Autopunks?
Grant : Well anyone can basically sign up by means of filling out an application form for an annual membership subscription.
JK : Lastly, any Free plug? (members in the club, family, anyone that supports your club).
Grant : Well we have 16 family members in this club who supports effortlessly. I couldn’t have done this without their help.
Thank you Grant for your time and I wish you guys everything of the best in future!
Until then…God Bless!!!!
