Knysna Hillclimb event – 2010

18 October 2010 No Comment

The Annual Knysna Hillclimb is this weekend, the event runs from the 22nd to the 24th of October. The event pulls all sorts of cars and they all battle it out on the Knysna Hills.
Event overview:
The first Knysna Hillclimb took place in October 2009 to great acclaim from sponsors, partners, competitors and the general public. As a result of the overwhelmingly positive response, it was decided to make the event an annual one.

While the Hillclimb is a new event on the South African motorsport calendar, its inaugural running has seen it immediately position itself as one of the premier events on the local motorsport scene.

It is the organiser’s objective to build on this first success to develop the event into the South African equivalent of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. While the Hillclimb will always remain our core event, we want our celebration to be far more than just a single motorsport race.

Our intention is to use the event to act as a catalyst to create a broader ‘Speed Festival’; incorporating a variety of events that will not only benefit our nominated charities and provide significant economic benefit for the town of Knysna, but will offer a solid platform for our sponsors and partners to derive the maximum return on investment from their involvement.

With this as the basis, it is our goal to build the Knysna Hillclimb, and Knysna Speed Festival, into the premier event on the South African calendar.

While the event is based in Knysna – well away from traditional motorsport venues – its unique appeal attracted participants from around the country to compete in the inaugural event. Knysna is a destination in itself and as such the 2009 event attracted entries from as far afield as Johannesburg and spectators from as far as Cape Town. In 2010 we are aiming to stretch this appeal even further by inviting one or two international competitors who have expressed an interest in taking part.

Although motorsport is not a sport commonly associated with the beautiful seaside town of Knysna due to its location far from large cities and limited road network, it is the beauty and uniqueness of the town that makes it a perfect fit for a Hillclimb event.

Furthermore, the Simola Country Estate, key partner in the event, is one of the world’s most spectacular golfing and residential estates with views over the Knysna Estuary and Heads (leading to the ocean) that are certainly hard to beat.

We can safely say that no other Hillclimb in the world can offer as spectacular a vista as the Knysna Hillclimb.

The Hillclimb was conceived and created by Knysna businessmen Francis Cusens, Chick Ramsay and Ian Shrosbree.
