Legends at The Rock Raceway

29 April 2011 One Comment

When bearing in mind that, after a few quick calculations, the Lamborghini Gellardo Valentino Coupe slaps down 0.39HP per kilogram of weight, and the Legends car 0.24 HP per kilogram of weight, one finds the thoughts of “oh what a cute little toy” quickly and very discreetly slipping away as you breath a sigh of relief that you didn’t make that comment out loud! Firing these beasts up on the track makes you start to think of the midgets. Standing on the track with “The Legend” Kevin Hepburn, and “Mr Rock” Tim Stephens fills you with awe at the speed and agility of these beauties (it fills you with a few other emotions when you see the frame in your camera fill up very rapidly with Legend Car and you realize that you are totally zoomed out!)

The first Legend car was unveiled in April 1992 at Lowe’s, made in North Carolina and are the largest mass produced race cars in the world. They are “spec” series cars meaning basically meaning that they are mechanically identical. At an extremely reasonable price of R125 000, you get a race ready car, comes out white so you can custom spray it, wrap it or brand it as you please, a full tubular frame with integral roll cage, race seat with harness, a 1300cc (120bhp) na carb Yamaha Engine, 5 speed sequential gearbox. Suspension is sporting Bilstein gas shocks, coil over springs, a solid rear axle and a double “A” arm in front, all fully adjustable. I did note the very neat fuel call in the back which thrives on 95 unleaded pump fuel. The entire car bolts together and, with 4500 units worldwide, every spare is catalogued and available.

A series including four drivers from South Africa, Russia, Morocco and Spain on a world points scoring system culminating in the World Finals is in the planning as well as corporate days, Oval Series and Track series. For more information, contact Kevin Hepburn on 078 3109577. These Legends are also on display at the Gauteng Motorshow.

More info can be gotten by clicking on the red highlighted: The Rock Raceway, Legends Racing SA, View a Legend Drift and some Legend Racing

With this versatile (see them on track, oval, drifting even dragging) car, I am looking forward to a long and exciting future here in South Africa.

Yours Truly (you can click on that too ;-0)
