Nitro Raceway

So, upon arrival at nitro raceway, running a bit late for the races which began at 9 and ended at 12, I offloaded my gear, got everything ready and strolled off to the staging area wondering what this airstrip in Brakpan had to offer. As this thought was flowing through my mind I was startled by a light aircraft, flaps down and flared out about 20 feet overhead. Wow, either these guys have organized a fly by (my mind goes back to the 95 world cup) or the okes are dragging against aircraft. As it turned out, the events at Nitro Raceway take place on the runway at an operational airstrip. Yes, they do have to stop the races every now and then for a plane to land! I find this added element to this straight line sport extremely appealing.

The spectator turnout here was the largest I have seen at any drag event, which offers ample parking (yes ok, so every now and then a plane lands in the middle but that’s a good thing, isn’t  it), more than enough space for spectators, a huge array of competitors and an IASCA SPL sound comp taking place at the end of the runway.

Much to my glee, they had 2 top fuellers and an Escort funny car that I had seen at a motor show earlier on in the year and was dying to see this car run. At the show, this car (its exhaust outlets behind the front wheel) actually stripped the tufts of grass out of the ground when it was given the slightest hint at an oncoming aspiration. Its run was remarkable. Please note that there are no pictures of its launch, well let me tell you, I don’t think pictures of this cars launch exist anywhere, it is that quick, but the oke at the end of the runway who was busy doing his SPL reading clocked a good few extra db’s on the house.

The end of the strips marked the beginning of a concert on the airfield featuring a host of local talent.

The  spectator pleasing competitors and extras on offer at this stunning venue is going to result in me being there on a very regular basis in the new year!
