SPL Feature – Bass In Your Face

16 November 2011 6 Comments

So deep it Hertz…

I remember when I had my first sound setup in my car, blowing almost all my wages on expensive equipment. The neighbours were complaining and pushing a SPL reading of 140dB’s at a sound off event was impressive. That was then and time has changed, so is the competition and sound equipment.

Dennis Kinnear, from Mitchells Plain in Cape Town, owns a 150 plus dB car. His choice of SPL car is a 1979 Ford Escort mk2. Now for those that don’t know how loud that is, let me explain it in simple theory. A Boeing 747 at 100 m distance can have a sound pressure level of 130 dB. Rock music at a concert has a SPL of 150 dB and my experience in this lil’ orange banger was “get the hell out of here”! What started off as a simple setup slowly drifted into one of Cape Town’s loudest SPL cars. It all started about 3 years ago when Dennis bought the shell and built the car himself. After completion he attended some car shows but was more attracted to the sound side of things. Little did he know that his once beloved Escort would turn into one scary SPL monster. He started competing at events and has won quite a number of awards and is currently the loudest Escort in town. His current dB reading is a SPL of 152.7dB’s and his aim is to do 160dB’s. “You don’t need art of the state equipment to hit a number like that, only some magic”, he laughs.

Most of the sound equipment used in this lil’ banger hails from the Targa stable. A big thanks to Zaid from Deaf Row Audio for helping him setting up this mass of distraction. The first thing you’ll notice is the wall of woofers behind the driver and passenger seat, nicely recovered draped in red. Four 12 inch Targa XXX subwoofers are nested in here along with two 10 inch ports responsible for that massive bass waves.  These puppies are powered by two Solar D4 12000w amps, which have been nicely fitted in the boot along with a Starsound 1500w amp that powers the front stage. Also fitted in the boot are two dry cell batteries, nicely fitted in each corner. I must admit, for a SPL car this must be one of the neatest boot install I’ve ever seen. The whole system is controlled by a Targa MP3 player and setting the frequencies at an event he uses a Targa parametric.

Car Audio specs:
Four 12 inch Targa XXX subwoofers that are powered by two Solar D4 12000w amps(competition use only);
Targa 6 x 9’s and Targa tweeters powered by a Starsound 1500w amp
Targa MP3
Targa parametric
Targa cables

Before I left, Dennis gave me a demo of how loud his car really is. That demo lasted like 3 seconds for me! So the next time you see Dennis at an event, holla at him and don’t be shy to ask him for a demo but remember, vibrations may excite…
