St. Clare’s church of Assisi fundraiser event

26 February 2011 No Comment

Never in my life have I’ve seen so many people at a car show event. Personally, I think the whole Ocean View community came out to support the St. Clare’s church of Assisi fundraiser event that took place at the Ocean View High school on Saturday, 12 February 2011. Ocean View is a so- called “coloured” township, situated in the area of Noordhoek and Kommetjie. The fundraiser took in form of a “Show and Shine” and “Sound Off” event. The church approached Grant and his dedicated crew, Team Autopunks, to help them hosting this event. It was advertised at all the right places, like local shops, Facebook and right here on AM’s site. Grant asked me, Bronwen and Kevin to be judges at the “Show and Shine”.

As I pulled up, I’d notice a couple of cars were surrounded by the masses admiring them. Things got a little bit out of hand when the infamous “Dinky Toy” and Donovan, with the red and black supercharged Conquest, pulled up. Everyone ran towards their cars and to be honest, not once did Donovan and Claude have a chance to wipe the dust or clean their cars for the show competition. There were a number of nice looking Golfs and Toyotas entering the show competition and one of my personal favourite was a red Nissan 300ZX, totally restored with some black leather interior and sexy 18 inch wheels. A black Pathfinder, with 22 inch spinners, also came out to “show off” and before I could snap it, it sped off. On the sound side, every competitor was given one free run. The competition was quite tight, especially amongst the taxis. One taxi was fitted with twelve 12 inch subwoofers and was pumping the beats throughout the day. There were some nice SPL readings with most numbers in the mid 140’s. Pity I had to do the “Show and Shine” judging because it took my focus off the nice dB readings.

All and all, it was a nice packed event with some stiff “Show” and “Sound” competition! The event ended at a reasonable time and prize-giving was done and everyone walked away happy. As we left, we took the whole Ocean View with us-literally! People were running after the cars, begging us to give them some proper show, “dicing”, as we call it on the Cape Flats. We just laughed, hoping that the Metro Police didn’t see us as we left Ocean View in tyre smoke!
