Super Car Show‏ – Simons Town Navy

5 April 2011 5 Comments

The much anticipated Navy Festival took place from 1-3 April 2011. Besides their standard attractions like ships and Submarines, Tug rides, flea markets and all the other usual things, they have added an additional attraction in the form of a car show. Team Venom Designz in conjunction with Team Autopunks hosted an AWESOME “Super Car Show” on Saturday, 2nd of April 2011.

I was invited to be part of the “Show and Shine” judging panel. It was raining the whole week, but we were blessed with some nice autumn weather with no rain. I arrived on the premises at 7:30am and already some nice looking “show” cars were parked in the road that was allocated for the “show” and “sound off” competitions. The guys were busy cleaning and polishing their cars and one good thing about this venue is the fact that it is situated between buildings-no wind or dust. Soundmatch, Cape Town’s leaders in sound, had a stand with some cars on display, each one with nice looking sound installations. Mujeit surely knows how to turn a simple setup into something looking good. They were also one of the sponsors and how I wish that I was part of this competition. Another stand that also drew the crowd was Lalla’s Tires & Mags. Sharief needs no introduction to the Cape Town car scene when it comes to wheel deals and sponsorships. He also sponsored all the trophies for the “Show and Shine” competition and some awesome prizes for the participants.

The day kicked off early and to judge 30 plus cars was challenging. People came into thousands to the event and there was a time when it was difficult to walk and even take photos of the cars. Some of Cape Town’s usual showstoppers were on display with likes of Dinky Toy, Dirkie’s holographic Beetle, Claxton’s 13B Rotary turbo’d Mazda, and Neville’s orange turbocharged XR3 not forgetting the infamous Caddylicious. Rodney’s Lambo’d door Bantam drew quite a crowd, no wonder he took first place in the Mini Trux category. Zabby’s Prelude also had people looking twice with its awesome flipped spray job. My personal favourite was the Chevy Elcamino with its V8 power horse owned by Wallied. This bakkie is totally restored, from the body to the engine. Apollo, V8 VW Kombi, entertained the crowd with its 42 inch Full HD plasma and banging sound system while Brent played his PS3 and Xbox. Evert, from Team Zoopedup, show off his beloved “Lady”. Attention to detail assured him a well-deserved 1st place in his class. What I also noticed was the amount of new comers to the “show” scene. Jacques’ grey Conquest RSi is a minter and by the look of things, it will be some good competition at shows still to come. Cape Town is well known for its car clubs. CTSR Crew, BM Squad, Cape Flatz Tunerz, Volk-Edition, MK Club and not forgetting the guys from Paarl, Team Toy Freaks, came all out to support the event. The Sound Off was hosted by none other than Grant and his crew, Team Autopunks. It was well attended by Team Hectic, Team Bass-Sick, Bass-Masters Inc and Team FSMD and other competitors. There were some nice SPL numbers but the day belonged to Raymond. He pushed out a reading of 156.78dB, the highest SPL reading for the day! Chris scored a nice 142.74dB in the “Bakkie class”. Team Bass-Sick won the “Best Support” trophy. Most of the contenders achieved some good numbers with Team Hectic winning the club challenge.

The day ended with some good results for both the “Show and Shine”- and “Sound Off”- competitions. This was one the biggest events that I’ve experienced thus far in Cape Town. I can’t remember when last I’ve went to a show with so many cars on display as well as the number of car clubs supporting an event. Thank you to all the participants for bringing your showstoppers to the show. A big THANK YOU to ALL the sponsors; Sharief from Lalla’s Tires & Mags, Mujeit and crew from Soundmatch, Dinesh Auto Trimmers, Tiger Wheel & Tire (CBD-Lynton), Mace Performance Centre (Hammy) and Color Spray (Grassy Park). You guys made this day a HUGE success.

That bakkie belongs to my homeboy Yaseem but known the peeps as Charra. He and his “Caddylicious” are well known to the Show and Shine scene in Cape Town. You can always count on him for support. By the way, his bakkie is the only bakkie that I know of that is fitted with 9 tv screens and no, he doesn’t own a tv shop…

    Blair Reply:

Yea iv seen it around quite a bit, 9 Tv screen… WTF! That’s crazy man, not even 9 mense can climb into it lol, so where are all the screen situated? It looks very cool though :)

    Joe Klein Reply:

Lol, airvents, sunvisers, headrests and one big one, the size of a sunroof in the roof-for real!!!!

    Joe Klein Reply:
