Top Gear Festival – Kyalami Grand Prix circuit

22 March 2011 2 Comments

In a nutshell, anyone going to a world class racetrack and not expecting to have to walk a bit or there being a chance of rain, well then they should really hop into that above mentioned nutshell… Really…
Top gear proved to be all it was made out and more. I decided to get there way early on sun morning to beat the crowd and orientate myself, which was a very wise decision (only cos I am wise) (sometimes) and got into the exhibition halls when they were relatively empty, to be greeted by hoards of many a collectors “Subjects Of Drool” which we will now refer to as SOD’s. Numero uno was not an “Uno” but the Red Bull f1 car, wow, just being in its presence inspired awe. Then to the hosts of SOB’s on display including Mclarens, Ferraris, Bugattis and better, from bygone eras of class, distinction, muscle to the modern sod of all sorts and guess what… A media pass allows you to touch!

From there we rotated around the food court and the food court and the food court, and the Speed ‘n Sound drifts, where their Lumina’s, despite being oxygen starved the entire day and going through enough tires to build a French drain large enough to service Johannesburg, gave hundreds of spectators suicide seat rides without an ounce of failure (from the cars)! Respect!
The BP stunt training school supplied a hoard of breathtaking events, keeping the crowds away from the “Stig’s Garage”, which was packed with exotics which this poor, unfortunate fellow is expected to drive, shame, my heart pumped lumpy custard!

Onto “the bowl” where we were just in time to get Jody Scheckter tearing up the track in the Red Bull F1, going  tonk out to get a new track record (well, I think he is now the fastest farmer in the world), Sabine Schmitz in her Jaguar powered ice cream truck (yes it is not just all show, it actually produces ice cream) beat a Renault Megane in a three lap race (the same Renault she beat Coulthard in, yes this woman is a demon) and the Gabriel Pitts Special airshow.

From there we went to the Thunderdome to watch the show. All I can say is I am glad nobody told me about this show before cos it was mind blowingly spectacular. There have been a lot of complaints about this show being a bit pricey and short but this is what we were given. The monster truck with a massive air cannon launching a scooter with an atom on the ground trying to race the above mentioned airborne scooter. The same truck launching a fridge 100 metres at a Mazda… Just cos it can. The stunt bikes doing aerial acrobatics and the Red Bull stunt teams doing their land acrobatics. A Gullwing Benz and a Ferrari on portable “dynos” having a race to inflate 3 storey high plastic dolls. The Jozi Spinners and The Stig doing donuts in a London Taxi. 4 Taxis doing their best to stomp out about 12 radio controlled “mice” (cars), they got the mice but only 2 of them were remotely drivable afterwards, and a Nissan Micra doing a bungee jump! Short?… No, pricey?… No, action packed?… Definitely

Why don’t they host these kind of shows in CPT? We got the weather and the best custom cars in SA!!!
