Woman in Motorsport – Vicki Kemp

5 March 2011 2 Comments

Teenage South African racing driver Vicki Kemp is set to race the Wesbank 2011 series in the Formula VW series starting this Saturday at Kyalami in Johannesburg. After a frustrating year of practical complications and a lack of sponsorship whilst racing in the Wesbank V8 Supercar series, Kemp has decided to focus her attention on a new class of racing.

The Formula VW car is a high performance single seater racing car that provides exciting racing and quick lap times. This series also claims the title as the fastest race series in the country. “My team and I have taken a strategic decision to shift from the V8 Supercar class to the Formula VW class. In order to secure sponsorship funding, which enables me to race, I need to be achieving good results and winning races,” Kemp says. “I feel that this class will give me a better chance to prove my capabilities as a racer.” Kemp will be racing in a strong class with talented young drivers, some of whom she competed against in the karting division in her earlier years. Kemp says, “Although my competitors have had a lot more experience than me in this category of racing, I am prepared to work hard to make every race a success.” Kemp, who is just 19, started her racing career at the age of 10 when her father Eugene Kemp bought her a 60cc GP Junior kart. She achieved success in 2007 becoming the first girl to win a South African National Karting Championship. In 2010 Kemp got behind the wheel of a powerful V8 supercar and completed her first regional event at Celso Scribante Race track in her hometown of Port Elizabeth. Vicki was selected as one of 40 racers out of 700 applicants to participate in the 2010 NASCAR Driver Talent Search and Shoot-Out in Sacramento, California.

Kemp will test her skills against other experienced racers this Saturday during the first leg of the Wesbank Super series at Kyalami. Catch her in action at 1:30pm, and follow her progress on twitter @vickikemp16 follow.
